2023 - all updates

November 2023: Alexander Stadium legacy and Perry Park enhancement works

We received Spend Control Board approval for a reduced sum. Redesign proposals are taking place to meet the new budget threshold.

Further updates will follow.

October 2023: Alexander Stadium Legacy and Perry Park enhancement works

Further to the intervention of a Section 114 notice, new spend control measures are in place that require documented approvals for all council activity. This means that all work on Birmingham City Council’s delivery of the capital programme at the Alexander Stadium has been paused for now, whilst it is reviewed and assessed by the Section 151 Spend Control Board and Section 151 Officer.

Should spend approval be granted, the previously advertised programme for the delivery of the work will need to be reassessed following consultation with the appointed professional teams.

On receipt of the spend control outcome, further updates will be communicated to stakeholders and the wider community to include anticipated timelines.

As communicated through the stakeholder engagement meetings in the summer, this work is subject to a planning application being submitted, which cannot take place until the above review is concluded.

August 2023: Warm-up track infield - non-material amendment approval

This is an amendment to the previous application for the redevelopment of the Alexander Stadium, which was submitted in 2019 (application reference number: 2019/07968/PA). The amendment is separate to the Alexander Stadium legacy and Perry Park enhancement works planning application and is determined by the technical requirements of the artificial pitch and the conditions outlined in the previous application.

July 2023: Alexander Stadium legacy and Perry Park enhancement works - public consultation now live

Additional funding has been secured to deliver further enhancements at the stadium and Perry Park. This follows the first stage of the Alexander Stadium redevelopment, and the success of the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games.

June 2023: Warm-up track infield - change of surface

We will be asking the council’s planning department for approval to change the surface of the warm-up track infield (the area in the centre of the track) from grass to an artificial pitch.

This will enable the pitch to be used for a greater range of sports activities by the community, schools, and athletes.

If approved, it is anticipated that the works will be carried out in autumn to winter 2023.

We will let you know if this date changes.

June 2023: Final adjustments to legacy lighting solution

A separate planning application will be submitted to the council’s planning department regarding the final adjustments to the legacy lighting solution in the main stadium bowl.

A lighting assessment will be carried out and submitted as part of this application, and will be available to view on our website.

June 2023: Access in and around Perry Park

Temporary fencing has been installed in Perry Park to ensure the safety of pedestrians. This is because there has been a need to undertake works to reinstate the park following the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games.

These works are known as the ‘reinstatement works’.

As some of these works are now complete, we are pleased to open a further section of Perry Park, to the east of the Walsall Road allotments, where the former pedestrian screening area tents were located during the Commonwealth Games.

The map below shows the available parkland and pedestrian routes:

February 2023: Changes to temporary fencing in Perry Park

The temporary fence line in Perry Park will be changed on 24 February 2023 to enable further reinstatement works to take place following the Commonwealth Games. To ensure the safety of pedestrians, the section of Perry Park outlined in red on the plan below will not be publicly accessible for the foreseeable future, whilst the reinstatement works are undertaken.

Birmingham City Council has sought to keep pedestrian routes and parkland accessible as far as possible, whilst the reinstatement works take place. The available parkland, and pedestrian routes are shown on the plan below in yellow.

Be aware that the pedestrian route between the GMAC and Allotment Way (running to the rear of the allotments) is only publicly accessible between 7am to 10pm Monday to Friday and 8am to 5pm Saturday and Sunday. Outside of these times, the associated security gate will be closed. The location of the gate is shown on the plan.

In parallel to the reinstatement works being undertaken, Birmingham City Council will develop proposals for wider improvements to the park. The reinstatement works will allow the council to deliver these improvements in the future.

Whilst it is not currently possible to confirm when the temporary fencing will be removed due to the complexity of the stadium project, stakeholders and the local community will receive regular updates on the status of the reinstatement works and associated temporary fencing. Stakeholders and the local community will also be contacted in due course regarding opportunities to contribute to proposals to enhance the park.
