Alexander Stadium legacy and Perry Park enhancement works

Following the first stage of the Alexander Stadium redevelopment, and the success of the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games, we have secured additional funding to deliver further enhancements to the stadium and Perry Park.

We are developing proposals that support the aspirations of the Perry Barr 2040 masterplan, and seek to deliver:

  • an enhanced park
  • a multi-purpose stadium - for community use and to host sporting, leisure and cultural events

The public consultation took place between 17 July and 14 August 2023 with feedback being considered as part of the ongoing development of the design, before the planning application is submitted.

Proposed Perry Park landscape improvements masterplan

Following community engagement in summer 2023, further stakeholder engagement took place during April and May 2024 seeking views on updated improvement plans for Perry Park. The plans were developed by our in-house landscape designers, The Landscape Practice Group. A consultation via our BeHeard website asked for views on play activities for the proposed new play area.

Key proposals for Perry Park are split into two work packages.

Alexander Stadium lighting upgrade planning application

To support the future use and sustainability of the stadium, an updated lighting design is being proposed which would accommodate community use and local, national, and international events. The proposals allow lighting levels to be changed for different uses at the stadium to prevent the need for disruptive temporary lighting solutions in the future.

Relatively low levels of lighting would be used during a normal week. The highest levels will be used for a limited number of major events. The first major event is likely to be the European Championships in 2026.

Have your say

The planning application for the lighting design has now been submitted. Once processed, you will be able to view and comment via our Planning Online website.

The information within the application includes:

  • lighting assessment
  • landscape and visual impact assessment
  • bat lighting impact assessment

These assessments consider any impacts on the surrounding environment and residential properties, and how these would be lessened.

If approved, the lighting would be installed during autumn 2024.
