I've found a dog

Anyone who finds a stray dog must inform us and has a legal obligation to hand the dog to either its owner or us.

Your safety is most important. Do not attempt to restrain or handle a dog that is showing signs of aggression.

Report a stray dog online

or contact Birmingham Dog Warden on 0121 303 6007.

Out of hours

Our out of hours service operates

  • Monday to Thursday, 5pm to 11pm
  • Friday, 4pm to 11pm
  • Weekends and bank holidays, 9am to 11pm

If you find a dog outside of Birmingham, please contact the relevant local council.

We do not provide a stray dog collection service outside of office hours. Any dogs found at these times that cannot be reunited with their owners can either be:

  • looked after by you (the finder) until the next working day if safe to do so
  • taken to our out of hours kennels until 11pm every night.

If you have not been able to locate the owner, or are unable to safely look after the dog until the next working day, call our out of hours kennels on 07500 553 000 (do not text this number). We will tell you which kennels to take the dog to.

To arrange for a stray dog to be collected on the next working day, contact Birmingham Dog Warden on 0121 303 6007 or complete our online form.

Any dangerous dog should be reported to the police on 101, or 999 in the case of an emergency. Injured dogs should be referred to the RSPCA on 0300 1234 999.

What else can I do?

Most dogs are microchipped and many wear a collar and tag. If there are no details on the collar, take the dog to any vet to check for a microchip. This should be done free of charge. If a chip is found, the vet will contact the microchip company for the owner's details. The microchip company or vet will then contact the dog's owner.

Many lost dogs in Birmingham are reported as missing with K9 Search. You can visit their website or call 07988 433187. The owner may already be looking for their dog.
