East Birmingham Inclusive Growth Programme

Overview of the programme

East Birmingham has over 309,000 residents with one-third of them being aged 17 and under. It is an extensive area of immense diversity and opportunity with a network of vibrant communities, excellent transport links, rich heritage and array of green spaces. The area is an important location of business, commerce, industry, and innovation.

What the programme is

The East Birmingham Inclusive Growth Programme is a 20-year initiative to bring investment into the area and create strong links between the council and the community. Working in partnership, we aim to give residents, local businesses and community groups the tools to build on the great work already taking place in East Birmingham.

The programme is part of a wider plan for the East Birmingham and North Solihull Growth Corridor, and Levelling Up Zone stretching from Birmingham city centre to Birmingham Airport and NEC and what will be the new Arden Cross HS2 Interchange. It links to other planning strategies including Our Future City Plan, Bordesley Park Area Action Plan, neighbourhood plans, and ward plans.

East Birmingham has challenges but also many opportunities. Much of the area is in the top 20% most deprived areas in England. This means that income, unemployment, health, education, housing, crime and living environment are generally poorer than elsewhere in the country. However, with important transport connections, numerous development sites, areas of historic importance, nationally recognised industry and a network of urban villages, the area has great potential. The programme will work directly with the community and stakeholders who want to see East Birmingham flourish.
