New Local Plan for Birmingham

We are working on a new Local Plan for Birmingham which will guide how the city will develop in the future and provide policies to guide decisions on development proposals and planning applications. up to 2042.

We are calling it the ‘Birmingham Plan’.

Once it has been adopted, it will replace the following plans:

  • Birmingham Development Plan (2017)
  • Aston, Newtown and Lozells Area Action Plan (2012)
  • Longbridge Area Action Plan (2009)

More information about these documents can be found on the adopted Local Plans page

We are currently in the evidence gathering stage of the plan-making process and are preparing an Issues and Options Document for consultation in Autumn 2022.

Sustainability Appraisal

A new draft Sustainability Appraisal (SA) Scoping Report has been prepared, which is a technical document that will inform the preparation of the new Birmingham Plan. It is not part of the Birmingham Plan itself but it will be used to identify and assess the potential impacts of planning policies and site allocations that are proposed within the new plan at key stages of its preparation.

The draft document was subject to a 5 week consultation period which ended on 8 February 2022.

The representations made will be used to inform the next stages of the Sustainability Appraisal process.

The next stage SA report will be published alongside the Issues and Options consultation in Autumn 2022.
