New Local Plan for Birmingham

We are working on a new Local Plan for Birmingham which will guide how the city will develop in the future and provide policies to guide decisions on development proposals and planning applications up to 2042.

Consultation on the initial 'Issues and Options' stage of the Local Plan has now concluded.

It ran from 24 October 2022 to 5 December 2022.

Officers will now review all comments and proposals received during the consultation which will be used, along with further technical evidence, to produce the next stage of the Plan – the “Preferred Options” stage.

Once it has been adopted, it the Birmingham Local Plan will replace the following plans:

Birmingham Development Plan (2017)

Aston, Newtown and Lozells Area Action Plan (2012)

Longbridge Area Action Plan (2009)

More information about these documents can be found on the adopted Local Plans page.

Timetable for the Birmingham Local Plan

The Local Development Scheme (LDS) sets out the timetable for producing the Birmingham Local Plan.

A revised Local Development Scheme, setting out the key milestones in the preparation of the plan, came into effect on 11 October 2022.
