Our projects - major projects, transport, and connectivity

The East Birmingham Programme supports a range of transport and connectivity projects. Although these are wider multi-million pound projects with many different areas of focus, we actively support the transport and connectivity focus, such as:

  • the Birmingham Knowledge Quarter
  • the Sports Quarter
  • smaller initiatives that are important to East Birmingham and the wider EBNS area

Birmingham Knowledge Quarter

As the gateway to East Birmingham, along with Curzon HS2, Birmingham Knowledge Quarter (B-KQ) is a government-backed investment zone spanning 210 hectares in and around the Aston University and Birmingham City University campuses.

Find out more about Birmingham Knowledge Quarter

The project is delivering 580,000sqm of cutting-edge innovation and commercial space, and plans to create over 22,000 new jobs.

The East Birmingham Programme is working closely with B-KQ partners to deliver a programme of activity to develop B-KQ and attract investment.

Our B-KQ partners:

  • Aston University
  • Birmingham City University
  • Bruntwood SciTech
  • Woodbourne Group

B-KQ Active Travel

With investment of £3.5 million to establish a wide range of travel improvements across B-KQ to encourage active and sustainable travel.

This will include new improved public spaces that make the whole area more enjoyable and easier to travel as a pedestrian, a cyclist, and when using public transport.

B-KQ Gateway ‘Super Crossing’

With £5.5 million to transform the main gateway area from the city centre into B-KQ.

This will replace the existing crossing and create a more pedestrian friendly route.

Birmingham Sports Quarter Community and Connectivity

The Birmingham Sports Quarter Masterplan will see:

  • a new 62,000 seater Birmingham City Football Club stadium
  • a further multi-use stadium and training complex
  • new retail and entertainment venues

This is set to create 8,600 new local jobs.

The East Birmingham Programme team are working with owners, Knighthead, to encourage the most appropriate development that benefits the surrounding community.

Support with neighbourhood transport improvements

We support colleagues and partner organisations with a number of transport improvements where our insight can be helpful. Although smaller in scale, these are important improvements for our local communities.

Projects include:

  • Environment and Neighbourhoods Transport Fund (ENTF)
  • proposals by community groups for transport enhancements
  • our green projects with strong links to transport and connectivity
