Requests to name a new street

Utility companies will not install services without an official postal address and postcode.

Payment of fees for addressing is currently being processed manually whilst our application form is updated.

The team will contact you to confirm the fee payable. If you require an invoice, add it as note to your form.

When to apply for addresses

You should apply for addresses:

  • once you have received planning permission and are certain of the final layout of the proposed development
  • during the very early stages of construction and before it is substantially complete

Who can suggest new names

Developers are asked to provide suggestions for new street names.

These suggestions should follow the criteria set out in the council's Street Naming Numbering Policy.

Proposals should include:

  • a detailed reason for the choice of name
  • a location plan
  • a site layout identifying plot numbers and property entrances.

Payment is now taken when applications are submitted. You will need:

  • your planning permission number
  • a location plan
  • a layout plan showing main entrances and plot numbers
  • a debit or credit card

Duplicate applications will be charged the full application fee.

Pre-approved names

A list of pre-approved names is also available where the developer is unable to make suitable suggestions.

Request to name a new street

The naming of roads is a legal process.

Once a new street name has been officially approved, it cannot be renamed without a statutory order. This is costly and time-consuming and may involve a Magistrate Court hearing.

It usually takes up to 12 weeks to complete the naming of a new street.

Naming a street after a person who is no longer living

For streets named after a person who is no longer living, additional procedures are needed. This can add a further 4 to 8 weeks to the timescale.

Streets named after a person who is no longer living will also require the written agreement of the person's estate.
