Apply for a skip permit
If you wish to place a skip on any part of the highway (public road) in Birmingham, registered Skip Operators must apply for skip permits on behalf of their customers; it is not possible for members of the public to apply for permits themselves. You don’t need a permit to place a skip on private land.
When applying for a skip permit you’ll need to provide details of where you wish to place the skip, including:
- building number or name
- start date (the date on which the skip will be installed)
The maximum licence period for a skip is 7 days; after this time, you will need to apply for a new skip permit. The charge for a permit is £20, and we advise that you apply 5 days prior to your required start date.
Failure to provide a valid permit for any skip on a public road will result in a retrospective permit being issued, at a cost of £190, or the removal of the skip with any associated costs charged to the Skip Operator. The charge for removal and disposal of non-permitted skips is £220 per skip.
Using a skip without a permit
If you place a skip on the highway without a valid permit you’ll be required to apply for a late permit at a cost of £180. Failure to do so could result in the skip being removed with associated costs charged to you as the skip operator.
People using your skip without permission
We can’t take any action if people place items into your skip without your permission. We advise customers to have their rubbish ready to load into the skip, and arrange for it to be on site for the shortest time possible to stop others using it.
