Working as a counting assistant

Verification and counting of ballot papers will take place on 8 May 2026 at the Utilita Arena in the city centre.

Counting assistant duties and responsibilities

Full instructions are provided if you are appointed. As an overview, counting assistants must:

  • be available from 8:00am on 8 May 2026 until counting is complete
  • work as part of a team to verify and count the number of ballots in the ballot boxes for each polling station
  • follow instructions from a table supervisor
  • act impartially at all times
  • not wear badges, slogans or colours that may affect impartiality
  • bring enough food and drink to last throughout the day

Pay

If appointed you will receive a gross fee of £19 per hour, plus £10 for the time spent on training. Payment is made by BACS after the election.

Training
