Register to vote

Voting is optional, but you must be on the Electoral Register to vote.

You must register to vote by 20 April 2026 to vote in the 7 May 2026 elections in Birmingham.

You are not automatically added to the Electoral Register even if you pay Council Tax in Birmingham.

If you have moved house, you must re-register.

If you cannot register online, contact us to request a paper form. You must allow enough time for the form to be sent, completed and returned before 20 April 2026.

Apply for a postal vote

You can apply for a postal vote if you know you cannot get to the polling station on 7 May 2026, or if you prefer to vote by post.

You only need to give a reason if you want your postal vote sent to a different address from the one you are registered at.

You must be on the Electoral Register to apply.

To vote by post in the Birmingham elections on 7 May 2026, you must apply by 5:00pm on 21 April 2026.

We must receive your postal vote by 10:00pm on 7 May 2026 for it be counted.

Apply for a proxy vote

A proxy vote is when someone else votes at the polling station on your behalf.

Check whether you are eligible for a proxy vote and what information you need to provide on the GOV.UK website.

You must apply by 5:00pm on 28 April 2026 to use a proxy vote in the 7 May 2026 Birmingham elections.

You may be able to apply for an emergency proxy vote on polling day if something unexpected prevents you from voting in person and you have not used a postal vote.
