Moving traffic contraventions
We have powers under the Traffic Management Act 2004 to enforce moving traffic offences when drivers do not comply with Traffic Regulation Orders (TROs). These orders are in place to help keep our roads safe and functional for everyone.
Enforcement helps keep roads clear, improving traffic flow, reducing congestion, and boosting air quality. It also benefits public transport and emergency vehicles.
We focus first on prevention, good street design, and public awareness. Camera enforcement is used at targeted locations where evidence shows ongoing road safety risks. They are only used as a last resort as cameras are expensive to install and maintain.
Read about this approach in our Birmingham Road Harm Reduction Strategy.
Types of offences
Examples of moving traffic offences include not following rules for:
- banned turns
- one-way streets
- yellow box markings
- weight restrictions
- mandatory cycle and bus lanes
- restricted access
- school ‘keep clear’ markings
- red routes
How to identify banned manoeuvres
Road signs and markings will tell you what you are not allowed to do, such as 'no entry' or banned turn signs.
