Other ways to pay your Council Tax

You are responsible for paying your Council Tax on time and must allow up to four working days for payments to reach our account.

Paying by credit or debit card

To pay using your credit or debit card, you will need your 10-digit billing reference number, which starts with 50 and is shown in the top right of your bill.

You can pay your Council Tax by credit or debit card using our online form.

We do not accept American Express credit cards.

Paying by telephone

To pay by telephone:

  1. Phone the 24-hour automated payment line on 0121 464 2001
  2. Select 'option 1'
  3. Make payment using a debit or credit card

Paying by personal internet banking (Bacs)

To pay by Bacs, you will need your 10-digit billing reference number, which starts with 50 and is shown in the top right of your bill.

If you receive a revised bill, you need to check your billing reference number. If this number has changed, you will need to notify your bank.

Pay by post

Cheques and postal orders must be made payable to ‘Birmingham City Council’.

You must write on the back:

  • the 10-digit billing reference number starting with 50, which is shown on the top right of your bill
  • your name
  • your postcode

The cheque or postal order must be sent to the Council Tax team at:

Do not:

  • staple, pin or fold cheques
  • send your payment card, if you have been issued one
  • send cash by post

We are unable to issue receipts without an enclosed stamped and self-addressed envelope.

You must allow 5 working days for your payment to reach us.

Pay at the Post Office or by PayPoint/Payzone

You can make payments at any Post Office or PayPoint/Payzone outlet using the barcode on the front of your bill.

You can pay by:

  • cheque at the Post Office, by making the cheque payable to ‘Post Office Counters Ltd’
  • cash at a PayPoint or Payzone outlet but there may be a limit to the amount you can pay. A receipt will only be issued on request
