European Parliament - Extra MEP for the West Midlands Region

Following the recent reallocation of Members of the European Parliament (MEPs), the UK was granted one extra MEP. On the recommendation of The Electoral Commission, this extra MEP has been given to the West Midlands Region. The extra MEP has been selected by identifying the next eligible candidate based on the party lists supplied in 2009, using the D'Hondt method of counting. Please see attached the declaration of the new MEP from the Regional Returning Officer.

Registering to Vote

To be entitled to vote, your name must be on the Register of Electors.

In late August, a Household Registration Form is sent to every household in Birmingham. Printed on this form are the names of the people currently registered to vote at each property. If you wish to add or remove a name from the register you must make the change on the form and return it to us.

I have not received a Household Registration Form

The only way to vote during December - August is by completing a Voter Registration Form.

If you change your name between December and August you will need to write, email or fax your details to us so we can change the Register of Electors for you. We will write and confirm the change.

If you change your name just before or during the Annual Canvass of Households which is conducted every Autumn, you can send us the annual Voter Registration form.

How to Vote

If you are on the Register of Electors you will receive a poll card a few weeks before the elections. This will tell you how, where and when to vote. This card is for information only. Please let us know if you lose or forget your poll card; you can still vote without the poll card, but it is easier if you have it with you.

If you know you will not be able to get to the polling station on election day, you can apply for a postal vote or a proxy vote.

Different Types of Elections

There are various different types of elections covering all levels of government, they are:

  • Parliamentary General Elections

Recruiting Canvassers

Canvassers are employed annually by the Electoral Registration Officer (ERO) to assist in updating the Register of Electors for the whole city.
