Land ownership and boundary issues
Land ownership and boundary disputes are private matters. We do not regulate them.
You must resolve these issues with your neighbour, unless the dispute involves council-owned land. You can get advice from the Citizens Advice Bureau.
If the issue involves council land, you can report it using our Housing request form.
Report a land ownership or boundary issue on council land
If you want to find out who owns a fence or a piece of land, check the property’s title deeds. These often include boundary ownership details. You can get title deeds online from the Land Registry, or from your mortgage provider.
If your dispute involves work to or near a shared wall, it may be covered by the Party Wall Act 1996.
You can find more information about preventing and resolving party wall disputes on GOV.UK.
