Overview | Rent a garage from us | Birmingham City Council

Overview

We have garages located across Birmingham in a range of locations.

You can apply to rent a council garage if you:

  • are aged 18 years or over
  • live or work in Birmingham

Garage sizes

The size of our garages reflects the size of vehicles common at the time they were built.

Many council garages are older structures and may not be fully weather-tight or insulated. You should take steps to protect any belongings stored inside.

Typical garage measurements:

  • 4.8 metres long
  • around 1.8 metres high
  • around 2.1 metres wide at the door
  • around 2.3 metres wide internally

Because many garages were built several decades ago, some modern vehicles may not fit comfortably inside them.

What you can use a garage for

Council garages are mainly intended for parking a vehicle off the road.

They may also be used for reasonable domestic storage, provided this does not breach the garage licence terms and conditions.

Garages must not be used for

  • business activities
  • living or sleeping accommodation
  • storing hazardous, dangerous or illegal items
  • vehicle repairs that cause nuisance or environmental damage

If you want to use a garage for storage, you should be aware that council garages are not designed to the same standard as modern storage units.

You should avoid storing items that may be damaged by:

  • moisture
  • damp
  • temperature changes
  • pests

Cost of renting a garage

From 1 April 2026, the weekly rent is:

  • £13.06 per week (no VAT) – council tenants or leaseholders who pay ground rent to the council
  • £15.67 per week (including VAT) – all other customers

If a council tenant rents more than 2 garages, VAT will apply to the additional garages in line with HMRC regulations.
