Making Birmingham Green – Our Vision

Birmingham City Council is committed to a systematic transformation of the Council and the city to provide a sustainable future for the people of Birmingham.

This vision sees Birmingham evolving from a fossil fuel based economy to a low carbon economy, with residents and businesses engaged with and owning the cities carbon reduction targets. The city has already made bold steps through initiatives including electric vehicles, house retrofitting and district energy, and has worked successfully in partnership with a range of public and private sector organisations to deliver innovative sustainable projects

Birmingham has ambitious carbon reduction targets and the Birmingham Climate Change Action Plan 2010 and the Council’s 2015 Declaration provide the implementation framework for achieving a 60% cut by 2026, at 1990 levels.

However there is much work left to be done.

To save the city money andenergy we must make changes to the way we live and work, our transport system, and what we use.

We must harness renewable energy, promote biodiversity, reduce waste and improve recycling rates to save the city money and energy.

And we must prepare for and adapt to the changing climate.

We can only achieve this by working with schools, residents, and businesses to make these changes.
