HLB walkabouts

An estate walkabout is where housing staff, HLB members and others come together on a joint inspection of the neighbourhood to see what needs doing or improving. HLB estate walkabouts are an important way in which HLBs work with the local Housing Team to improve local conditions.

Other people involved in walkabouts can include:

  • other tenants and residents
  • repairs contractors
  • other council departments
  • the police
  • other public services

Walkabouts are intended to get to the bottom of problems in an area. They depend on the local knowledge which residents can provide. Tenants can identify important issues and agree actions and priorities, such as:

  • grass cutting
  • communal areas
  • recycling and cleaning
  • car parking and traffic
  • security and emergency safety
  • antisocial behaviour.

HLBs work with local housing teams to plan walkabouts and draw their attention to areas which need it. They also rate the appearance of the area, from poor, satisfactory and good. This helps to monitor performance, which is part of the HLB co-regulation role.

HLBs then review the results of walkabouts at meetings and chase up what action has taken place as a result.

HLB estate walkabouts are conducted regularly on areas which the council defines as an estate.
