Estate walkabouts

An estate walkabout is where housing staff, tenants or leaseholders, and partners come together on a joint inspection of the neighbourhood to see what needs doing or improving.

Walkabouts are an important way for residents to work with the local housing team to improve neighbourhoods.

Other people involved in walkabouts can include:

  • other tenants and residents
  • repairs contractors
  • other council departments
  • the police
  • other public services

Walkabouts are intended to get to the bottom of problems in an area. They depend on the local knowledge that residents can provide.

Residents work with the local housing teams to plan walkabouts, identify important issues, and agree actions and priorities, such as:

  • grass cutting
  • communal areas
  • cleaning
  • security and emergency safety
  • antisocial behaviour

They also rate the appearance of the area, from poor, satisfactory and good. This helps to monitor performance.

Tenant groups will review the results of walkabouts at meetings, and chase what action has taken place.

Walkabouts are conducted regularly on areas that the council defines as an estate.
