Special educational needs code of practice

The new Special Educational Needs (SEN) Code of Practice published in June 2014 by the Department for Education and was implemented from September 2014. This was updated in April 2015 to include new requirements for supporting children and young people with SEN when they are detained in youth custody.

The code gives guidance to early education settings, schools, Post 16 providers, local authorities and anybody else who helps to identify, assess and provide help for children and young people with special educational needs. It sets out the processes and procedures that all these organisations should follow to meet the needs of children and young people.
