Places at grammar schools in Birmingham – September 2025

If you are a parent and would like your child to go to a grammar school in Birmingham, they will need to sit an entry test. There is one entry test across all of Birmingham's grammar schools and also the grammar schools outside Birmingham that are part of the West Midlands Grammar Schools group.

Find out more about all the grammar schools listed above on the West Midlands Grammar Schools group website.

Only children born between 1 September 2013 and 31 August 2014 can take the entrance test in 2024 for entry in September 2025.

Applying to sit an entry test is not the same as asking for a place at the school (an expression of preference). You must also complete the application form of your home local authority (this is the local authority where you pay your Council Tax).

Children older than 11 years may not register for the tests. However, parents or carers can still contact these schools about their admission arrangements outside the Year 7 transfer process.

Entry tests for grammar schools that are not part of the West Midlands Grammar Schools group

Other local authorities that have grammar schools that are not part of the West Midlands Grammar Schools group may have different closing dates and admission arrangements. If you would like your child to sit entry tests for schools outside of West Midlands Grammar Schools group, you should contact the local authority for that area.

You can find your local council using a tool provided by GOV.UK.
