Projections

The population of Birmingham is projected to grow from 1,141,400 in 2018 to 1,186,000 (3.9%) in 2028 and to 1,230,000 (7.8%) by 2038.

The number of households is projected to increase from 422,500 in 2018 to 442,500 in 2028, an increase of 4.7%.

Early indications are that the projection models are giving moderately higher results.

The population projection for 2021 of 1,157,300 is 1.1% (12,400) higher than the census estimate of 1,144,900. However, the differences are substantially higher for some age groups.

The household projection for 2021 is 0.7% (2,800) higher than the Census estimate (423,500). ONS will use the information from the 2021 Census to produce 2021-base projections and these will be available from 2023.
