I am an OOSS provider, what can I do to support children and young people?
Our focus is primarily on safeguarding children and young people but we also want to support adults who are employed or volunteer at an OOSS. To effectively do this we need to know the OOSS we have in our city, so that we can offer them support, advice and training if necessary. The DfE have a dedicated webpage of information for providers, parents and carers on keeping children safe in community activities, after-school clubs, tuition, sports training and other out-of-school settings. Read the latest guidance and information.
As an out of school setting you should be committed to:
- safer Recruitment practices including the following advice regarding DBS certification.
- staff and volunteers working regularly in your setting and engaging in regulated activity - an enhanced DBS certificate (which includes barred list information) is required.
- staff who have opportunity for regular contact with children who are not engaging in regulated activity - an enhanced DBS certificate will be appropriate.
- volunteers who are not engaging in regulated activity – a risk assessment must be undertaken and professional judgement and experience used in deciding whether to obtain an enhanced DBS certificate.
- ensuring your premises or site on which activities are delivered, are safe and have the required Health and Safety measures in place.
- ensuring all staff and volunteers abide by an up-to-date Safeguarding and Child Protection Policy.
- ensuring all staff and volunteers have access to quality-assured Safeguarding and Child Protection training and regular updates.
We would like to know about your OOSS so that we can work together to support the wellbeing of children and young people in our city.
