Traffic cameras

To help support our duties under the Traffic Management Act 2004, we operate several temporary and permanent CCTV cameras to monitor road traffic conditions.

The cameras are operated by trained staff in our Urban Traffic Control centre and images are shared with the West Midlands Regional Traffic Control Centre.

On occasion, images are shared with members of our traffic teams or third-party contractors. These images are low resolution and contain no personally identifiable data. They are used solely for traffic monitoring.

We currently have 38 permanent cameras located on poles at the roadside or on buildings. The cameras have pan, tilt, and zoom functions so they can be rotated by the operator to focus in different areas near to the camera.

We also have a varying number of mobile traffic cameras, which can be moved to different locations depending on demand.
