Bin collection information

When will there be strike action?

Starting on 11 March Unite the Union escalated the strike action to 5 days per week (Monday to Friday) of continuous action.

Should I still put my bin out for collection?

Yes, continue to put your household waste bin (grey lid) out for collection.

From Monday 14 April 2025 your bin collections will take place on your usual collection day.

Check your collection date

Put your rubbish in or next to your wheelie bin outside your property, or at your usual collection point. If it is not collected on your usual collection day, leave your bin out and we will collect it as soon as we can. This may be on a weekend.

Do not put your recycling bin (blue lid) out for collection as they will not be collected. Kerbside recycling collection is still suspended during this period of industrial action.

Bin lids need to be closed, to reduce the risk of damage to bins and vehicles, and an increase in waste spillage.

Due to limited resources, we will be focusing on housing blocks and houses of multiple occupation.

How much waste are you collecting each day?

Before industrial action began, our crews were collecting around 1000 to 1100 tonnes of waste per day. However, in recent weeks our crews have collected 1500 to 1700 tonnes of waste each day, with a reduced team.

This highlights the need for transformation in the service we provide to residents.

We have cleared 100% of the large piles of waste in the hot spot areas and 85% across the rest of the city

What should I do with my recycling?

Recycling collections are suspended every day during this period of industrial action. If you can, take your recycling to a Household Recycling Centre where it will be recycled correctly. If you can’t, we apologise for the inconvenience but please keep hold of your recycling until the next opportunity.

We will still take a reasonable amount of side waste, including recyclables, which are in black bin bags and neatly positioned next to your household waste wheelie bin.

What happens to any side waste?

This will be collected whilst strike action is taking place. Any excessive waste needs to be in black bin bags. We ask that any side waste is presented in a way that reduces the risk of pests gaining access.

We are aware that some side waste hasn’t been collected, we apologise for the inconvenience and frustration this has caused.

What is happening about garden waste collections?

Garden waste is a paid-for service that residents can subscribe to.

Due to the increased level of strike action by Unite the Union, the garden waste service has been suspended until further notice.

We will be refunding all customers that have paid for a 2025 subscription. If you have a subscription, you do not need to contact us, refunds will be made automatically.

Are you still doing Bulky Waste collections?

We are not taking any further bookings for Bulky Waste collections at this time. If residents have already booked a bulky waste collection, before bookings were paused, this will still be collected.

Should I let you know when my bin is not collected?

We will be aware of bins not being collected, however you can also report your missed bin collection by visiting report a missed bin or sack collection.

Will I still receive assisted collections?

Yes, you will still have your assisted collection service provided. This is a priority collection.

Will I still receive my clinical waste collection service?

Yes, you will still receive your clinical waste collection service. This is a priority collection.

Are you still taking requests for replacement bins?

We have paused taking requests for replacement or additional bins.

If you ordered a missing residual bin (grey lid) that has been paid for, or a garden waste bin, before this suspension, we will aim to deliver your bin as soon as possible.

If you do not have a residual waste wheelie bin (grey lid), you can temporarily use bin bags instead of your wheelie bin.
