Clean Air Zone Early Measures Bus Scheme

The money made from Birmingham’s Clean Air Zone (CAZ) is used to improve transport networks in the city. This includes policies and projects to encourage people to choose public transport and to walk or cycle more.

We are improving some bus routes as part of a project called CAZ Early Measures Bus Scheme. You will be able to read about current projects on this web page which will be regularly updated.

Hockley Hill Bus Scheme

A bus lane from Hockley Hill Flyover to Constitution Hill on the inbound lane towards Birmingham city centre was proposed and consulted upon. The full business case for the scheme was approved in 2021.

From Hockley Hill Flyover to Constitution Hill there will be a dedicated bus lane operating every day from 7:00am to 10:00am and 4:00pm to 7:00pm. During these hours, the bus lane will be enforced by ANPR cameras. Buses, cyclists, solo motorcycles, and Hackney Carriages (black taxi cabs) are allowed to use the bus lane. All other drivers can only use the bus lane outside these enforceable hours.

The proposed bus lane will disrupt the normal flow of traffic that is currently in the area. Those who travel on the streets between Hockley Hill Flyover and Constitution Hill may be affected during enforceable hours as the existing parking on the northern section of the carriageway cannot be used. To reduce this disruption, extra parking on the southern section of the carriageway (outbound lane going away from Birmingham city centre) is proposed.

The bus lane is planned to be ready by the end of summer 2025.

Traffic Regulation Orders for this bus lane will be advertised soon.
