Selling your leasehold property

If you are selling your council home (also known as ‘assigning the lease’) you must offer it to the council first if you bought it within the last 10 years. This is known as the ‘Right to First Refusal.’

If you bought your home using the Right to Buy scheme within the last 5 years, you must also pay back some or all of the discount you received.

If applicable, you must also contact the Rent Service to arrange to hand in any garage keys.

Your solicitor can, if they wish, request a leasehold resale pack which costs £100.

After the sale has been completed, the new owner’s solicitor must email homeownership@birmingham.gov.uk with the ‘Notice of Assignment’.
