Transfer from Infant to Junior/Primary school
Children transferring from infant to junior/primary school in September 2022 must have been born between 1 September 2014 and 31 August 2015.
If your child attends a primary school it is not necessary for you to apply for a junior school place. Your child will automatically transfer to Year 3 at the same school.
However, if your child attends infant school, it is necessary for them to apply to transfer to another school for their Junior education.
If there are more applications than places at Birmingham Community schools, we will offer places in the following order of priority:
- Looked after children or children who were previously looked after (including previously looked after children from outside of England).
- Children who are attending the linked infant school when their parents apply and who will still be attending at the end of Year 2.
- Children (siblings) with an older brother or sister at the infant/junior school who will still be attending the school when they start.
- Children who live nearest the school.
Please ensure you check the Admission arrangements for Birmingham primary schools for individual academies, voluntary aided, free and foundation schools for their details of their oversubscription criteria.
Birmingham City Council runs a co-ordinated admissions scheme with neighbouring local authorities.
If your child is attending an Infant school in another local authority and you are applying for a place at the linked Junior School, then we recommend that you contact them for their admissions arrangements as this will help you to decide if your application is likely to be successful.
Birmingham City Council will only deal with applications for school places if you live in Birmingham and pay council tax to the authority.
If you live in Birmingham your application must still be made to Birmingham City Council.
