School age - when can your child start school?

The closing date for primary school applications for a place in a Reception Class for September 2019 is: Midnight 15 January 2019

Children in Birmingham can start school (Reception) in the September after their 4th birthday.

Example: If your child was born between 1 September 2014 and 31 August 2015, they'll be able to start school in September 2019.

When to apply

Parents can apply for a place in the Autumn of the year before their child turns 4 years of age. It is important that you apply for a place as soon as possible:

  • attendance at a nursery class does not give a child automatic priority for a place
  • do not wait until your child is five years old, or your preferred school may already be full

Late admissions

The closing date for primary school applications is 15 January 2019

Applications received after this date will only be considered after applications received on time.

Birmingham City Council will only consider applications received after the closing date as on time if either of the following exceptional circumstances have prevented the parent or carer from applying by the closing date:

  • A child and the person with parental responsibility have moved into the area after the closing date, or:
  • The local authority has contacted a parent or carer regarding information on their application requiring further investigation before the application can be accepted.

If you feel you have exceptional circumstances as above, please submit your late application via https://eadmissions.birmingham.gov.uk/prefs.php between 16 January 2019 and 22 January 2019. Important: You must in addition send an email to admissions@birmingham.gov.uk clearly stating in the subject box Exceptional Circumstances along with your online application reference number e.g. 330-2019-09-E-193481 and you must explain your exceptional circumstances in the email and attach any relevant documents if applicable e.g. proof of address as you have just moved to the city. Those late applicants who follow this process where their reasons are not deemed exceptional, will be treated as late applications accordingly.

Birmingham Local Authority must exchange provisional offers with other admission authorities on 30 January 2019. Therefore any late applications submitted from 23 January 2019 onwards no matter the circumstances cannot be considered until after the offer of places on 16 April 2019.
