Before you apply: researching primary schools
Applications for primary schools for entry in September 2027 open on 1 October 2026.
Schools you can apply for
You can list up to 3 different primary schools as preferences in your application. This list of preferences can include schools outside of Birmingham.
If you live in Birmingham and pay Council Tax to us, you must make your application to us.
We run a coordinated admissions scheme with our neighbouring local authorities.
If you are applying for schools in another local authority, we recommend you view their website for information on their school admissions arrangements. This will help you decide whether your application is likely to be successful.

Admission arrangements
You must read the admission arrangements for the primary schools you are interested in to see how likely it is that your child will be offered a place there.
The admissions arrangements for Birmingham primary schools for entry in September 2027 will be available from 1 October 2026.
Primary school admission arrangements
You should:
- visit the schools' own websites
- understand that how close you live to a school is very important — schools have cut-off distances which change each year based on demand
To avoid disappointment, be realistic in the 3 primary schools you list on your online application form. Make sure you read the school's admission arrangements.
Supplementary information
It is important to remember that:
- some schools (mainly faith schools and some academies) will ask you to send supplementary information directly to them
- supplementary information forms are available from the school
- once you have submitted your supplementary information form to the school, make sure you also submit your online application to us, or you will not be considered for a place at that school
If you are applying for a reception place at Al-Furqan Primary School for September 2027 under the faith criteria, you must:
- Download the supplementary information form for Al-Furqan Primary School.
- Complete the form and give it directly to the school by 15 January 2027. Details of where to return it are on the form.
- Complete your home local authority's application form by 15 January 2027. If you live in Birmingham, read the details of how to make your online application for reception class or primary school.
Open events
Schools may have open sessions you can attend to look around the school, or they may hold virtual online events throughout the autumn term. Visit the school's own website for details.
If your child has special educational needs or a disability (SEND), consider if your chosen schools are suitable for their specific educational needs. Talk to school staff at the open sessions if they are taking place, or contact them by phone or email.

Travelling to school
Think about how your child would travel to the schools you apply to. You are responsible for making sure your child can get to and from school.
