School age - when can your child start school?

The closing date for primary school applications for a place in a Reception Class for September 2019 is: Midnight 15 January 2019

Children in Birmingham can start school (Reception) in the September after their fourth birthday.

Example: If your child was born between 1 September 2014 and 31 August 2015, they'll be able to start school in September 2019.

When to apply

Parents can apply for a place in the Autumn of the year before their child turns 4 years of age. It is important that you apply for a place as soon as possible:

  • attendance at a nursery class does not give a child automatic priority for a place
  • do not wait until your child is five years old, or your preferred school may already be full

Late admissions

The closing date for primary school applications was 15 January 2019

Applications received after this date will only be considered after applications received on time.

Birmingham Local Authority has already considered all the late applications with exceptional circumstances received after the closing date, but submitted by 22 January 2019, that followed the correct process.

Birmingham Local Authority must exchange provisional offers with other admission authorities on 30 January 2019. Therefore any late applications submitted from 23 January 2019 onwards, no matter the circumstances, cannot be considered until after the offer of places on 16 April 2019.
