Other approvals you will need

Before you can occupy or work on the public highway, you will need some other approvals. We recommend contacting the relevant council departments as soon as possible.

Other approvals that you may need include:

  • Section 50 licence – covering work outside your site boundary or not covered by the s278 process, such as: hoarding, deposit of materials, scaffolding, cart over, crane.
  • Street lighting – covering any changes to street lighting. This is a two-stage process, with informal discussion with coming before formal submission of documents and payment of any fees.
  • Temporary Traffic Management Protocols (TMP1 and TMP2) – you will need approval from the council to work on any part of the public highway.
  • Traffic Regulation Orders (TROs) – you should work with the council on any necessary TROs. The s278 team will be able to advise whether your proposed changes will need a TRO and can put you in contact with the right people. Email privatedevelopments@birmingham.gov.uk.
  • Tree survey – covering tree removal and/or replacement and landscaping works and including Capital Asset Value for Amenity Trees (CAVAT) valuations.
  • On-street parking bay changes including temporary suspension and/or removal.
