May 2022

Since construction work on the A34 Highways Improvement Scheme began in June 2020, the majority of the key elements have been successfully completed, including:

  • removal of the Perry Barr flyover,
  • installation of a new bridge at what used to be Birchfield Island,
  • reconfiguration of Birchfield Junction, and
  • introduction of a new all-ways junction at the One Stop shopping centre/Harrier Way, which now allows access to this entrance from all directions.

Vast amounts of road resurfacing and the repaving of footways has also been undertaken, along with work to deliver a new bus interchange. The remaining work continues to be completed in a phased manner, as has been the case throughout the duration of the scheme.

All final surfacing works are set to be completed by the end of June, which will mark the point of substantial completion, with just some finishing works to some footways left to complete

Ahead of substantial completion, one of the last remaining major pieces of work will involve kerbing and carriageway resurfacing on the Birchfield Road (northbound) and A34, as follows:

  • Birchfield Road northbound slip will be closed from Birchfield Junction to One Stop from Friday 27 May (8pm) until Monday 30 May (6am)
  • Access onto the A34 from Birchfield Junction will be closed from Friday 27 May (8pm). Traffic accessing from local roads will need to follow a diversion route to the Sixways roundabout to join the A34.
  • Additionally, there will be a closure on the A34 southbound between the River Tame Bridge and Harrier Way from Friday 27 May (8pm) until Saturday 28 May (6am)

Whilst diversions will be clearly signposted, anyone wishing to visit locations in the area, or those preparing for travel that passes through, are urged to plan ahead
