Policies

City of Sanctuary policy

Our City of Sanctuary statement extends our commitment to include all refugees and migrants who are visiting, settling or working in the city.

Our commitment goes beyond offering a welcoming safe place. It focuses on creating a city where people from refugee and migrant communities can successfully resettle and integrate into the UK.

Our Sanctuary strategy and action plan 2026 to 2031 is coming soon.

Community cohesion strategy

We aim to tackle barriers that prevent people from reaching their full potential. This includes discrimination, isolation, poverty, segregation and a lack of ambition to improve life chances.

Our community cohesion strategy is coming soon.

Adult social care strategy

Our adult social care strategy focuses on creating fair, inclusive and person-centred services that reflect Birmingham's diverse communities.

It aims to reduce inequalities by:

  • improving access to support
  • using better data to understand people’s needs
  • working closely with residents and community organisations

The strategy also prioritises:

  • listening to lived experiences
  • co-producing services with citizens
  • making sure staff are equipped to deliver culturally responsive and respectful care

Overall, this is about making sure everyone feels valued, understood and able to access the right support at the right time.

As part of this work, resettlement and migration sit within the City of Sanctuary approach. This helps people who are new to Birmingham feel welcomed, supported and able to access the services and community networks they need to settle and thrive.
