Common interview mistakes
Interviews can feel stressful, but avoiding these mistakes will help you prepare.
Arriving late
Plan your journey. Check how long it will take and allow extra time for traffic or delays.
If something unexpected happens, call the interviewer as soon as you can.
Arriving early gives you time to relax before the interview.
Not knowing about the job or organisation
Read the job description and person specification. Look at the organisation’s website. This shows you are interested and prepared.
Making a poor first impression
Dress smartly. Make eye contact. Smile. Sit up straight. Speak clearly.
These small things help you look confident and professional.
Being overconfident
Confidence is good, but arrogance is not. Do not assume you already have the job.
Not answering questions fully
Avoid short answers. Give examples that show your skills and experience.
Listen carefully and take a moment to think before you reply.
Not telling the truth
Do not lie or exaggerate. It is easy to get caught out.
Criticising a past or current employer
Stay positive. Speaking badly about an employer can make you look unprofessional.
Not asking questions
Prepare a few questions about the job or organisation. This shows you are interested.
Asking about pay or holidays too soon
Do not ask about pay or benefits during the interview. Wait until you are offered the job.
