City Centre to A457 Dudley Road cycle route

In 2020, we installed temporary ‘pop-up’ cycle lanes across the city to help people travel safely and actively during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The routes chosen aligned with the Birmingham Walking and Cycling Strategy and Infrastructure Plan, which set out proposals for a city-wide cycle network. Many temporary cycle lanes include light segregation from other traffic using plastic posts.

In November 2021, we consulted on making the cycle route from the city centre to the A457 Dudley Road permanent.

Since the 2021 consultation, the designs have been modified to address feedback and improve the route and cycling infrastructure. We have also improved the signalised junction, including crossings at the A4540 Icknield Street.

We are now re-consulting on these updated designs.

To view the full list of proposals and respond to the online survey, visit the Birmingham Be Heard webpage.

Consultation closes on Friday, 12 December 2025.
