Why you should volunteer
Volunteering as a school governor is a great opportunity to:
- gain strategic leadership experience at board level
- develop transferable skills that enhance performance and employability
Most of all, you will have the satisfaction of making a real difference to children's lives and helping them to realise their potential.
The core functions of a governing board
These include, ensuring that the:
- vision, ethos, and strategic direction of the school are clearly defined
- headteacher performs their responsibilities for the educational performance of the school
- sound, proper, and effective use of the school’s financial resources
The time commitment
You will spend 10 to 20 days per year:
- getting to know the school
- attending meetings
- reading paperwork
- visiting the school
- undertaking relevant training
Qualifications
You do not need any specific qualifications for the role of governor, but you need to be aged 18 years or over, and have:
- the right attitude
- enthusiasm
- time to devote to the role
