Register of independent clerks
Every Governing Board (GB) is legally required to have a Clerk. Clerks have an essential role in the governance of the school.
School and Governor Support (S&GS) provides a range of services that support schools and Academies in ensuring their governance arrangements are effective and compliant with statutory regulations.
The role of a Clerk to Governing Boards is to:
- provide advice to the Governing Boards on governance, constitutional and procedural matters;
- provide effective administrative support to the Governing Boards and its committees;
- ensure the Governing Boards is properly constituted, and
- manage information effectively in accordance with legal requirements.
Governing Boards should employ an independent clerk with suitable skills and training.
The performance of the clerk should be evaluated on a regular basis and their pay should be commensurate with the professional service they provide.
DfE has also published a “Governance-handbook and Clerking Competency Framework” setting out the competencies required to deliver professional clerking to school Governing Boards and multi academy trusts.
