In-year school admissions
Pupils usually start school at the start of the school year in September. Sometimes your child will need to start or change school after this because:
- you move house within or into Birmingham
- you want your child to change schools for other reasons
If you have moved house, you will need to fill in an Application for a Change of School In-Year form (in-year application) and take it directly to your preferred school with proof of your home address, which is your child’s main and only residence.
Important
You cannot make an in-year application for a future academic year. For example, if you want your child to attend a school from September 2027, you must submit your in-year application directly to that school from 1 September 2027 onwards, not before.
The academic year starts in September of each year and ends in July of the following year.

If you want to apply for a place outside of Birmingham, you should contact the council for that area.
