Middle school admissions

Birmingham does not have any middle schools. However, some of Birmingham's neighbouring Local Authorities do operate middle schools.

Middle deemed primary schools admit children aged between 4 to 12 years old. For children born between 1 September 2019 and 31 August 2020, you can apply for entry in September 2024.

Middle deemed secondary schools admit children aged between 9 to 13 years old. For children born between 01 September 2014 and 31 August 2015, you can apply for entry in September 2024.

If you live in Birmingham and wish to apply for a middle school in another local authority for entry in September 2024, you will need to complete an in-year application form. After completing the application form, email it to admissions@birmingham.gov.uk with the subject heading 'Middle school admissions'.

Applications for entry to middle deemed primary schools for entry in September 2024 usually open on 1 October 2023 and close on 15 January 2024. Check the relevant local authority's website for confirmation.

Applications received after the statutory closing date (15 January 2024) for a middle deemed primary school will only be considered after applications received on time and processed after 1 March 2024.

Applications for middle deemed secondary schools for entry in September 2024 usually open on 1 September 2023 and close on 31 October 2023. Check the relevant local authority's website for confirmation.

Applications received after the statutory closing date (31 October 2023) for a middle deemed primary school will only be considered after applications received on time and processed after 1 March 2024.

If your child can be offered a place at middle deemed primary or secondary school, you will be informed of the offer in writing when the surrounding local authority announces their school places. Check the relevant local authority's website for confirmation of their dates.

If your child is not offered a place at a middle deemed primary or secondary school, School Admissions and Fair Access Service will not offer you an alternative school place. If your child is not currently in receipt of education, you will need to make an application for other schools through the normal in-year admissions process.
