Apply for a new premises licence for massage or other special treatment

You must have a licence if you want to offer massage or special treatments at premises in Birmingham.

This includes treatments such as:

  • body massage
  • solaria/sunbeds
  • saunas
  • therapeutic spa baths
  • jacuzzis
  • herbal baths
  • aromatherapy

Each premises is inspected every year to check that it meets health and safety standards and has suitable hygiene facilities.

West Midlands Police must be notified of all licence applications.

On the same day you apply, you must display a Notice of Application on or near the premises for 21 days. The notice must be in a position to be easily seen at all times by the public passing by outside the premises.

After the 21 days, complete and sign the certificate on the back of the notice and return it to the Licensing Section. We cannot issue a licence until we receive this.

Download the Notice and Certificate template.

The fee for a new massage and special treatment licence depends on how many treatments your your premises or business offers.
