School streets - Information for residents

Many streets experience traffic-related issues at the start and end of the school day. The School Streets help address these issues by temporarily restricting motor traffic on selected streets around schools at the start and end of the school day.
During these times, the designated streets become a Pedestrian & Cycle Zone, typically for 30 to 60 minutes. Clear signage at entry points informs drivers of the restrictions.
Motor vehicles are not permitted to enter or drive within the zone during these times, unless they hold an exemption permit.

Resident Permits

Residents living within the affected area can apply for a free School Streets permit, allowing them to enter and exit the zone during restricted hours.

Visitor Permits

Visitors to properties within the zone are generally asked to arrive outside of the times of this restriction or to park outside of the zone.
In circumstances where this is not reasonably possible, residents can apply for a permit for regular visitors.

Exemptions

Certain vehicles are automatically exempt and do not require a permit to enter the zone during restricted times. These include:

  • Blue Badge holders
  • Emergency services
  • Healthcare workers
  • Utility companies (for essential maintenance)
  • Refuse collection vehicles
  • Delivery of post and goods by a universal service provider such as Royal Mail
  • Licensed hire vehicles
  • Any other exemptions listed in the Highway Code

Temporary Permits

If someone needs access to your property for a fixed period of time – for example builders or decorators – you can apply for a temporary permit for them. You need to allow at least 7 days’ notice for this to be issued.

Consultation Period

School Streets are generally implemented on a trial basis using an Experimental Traffic Regulation Order. Under this, the first 6 months act as a formal (statutory) consultation period. Further consultation will take place before any scheme is made permanent.
