How schools are selected

Each Expression of Interest will be assessed against set criteria, to help identify locations where interventions are most needed and most likely to succeed. Here's what will be considered:

  • Location
Whether the area around the school is suitable for small-scale improvements like crossings, traffic calming, or greening.
  • Participation in School Travel Initiatives
Schools need to show a commitment to safer, healthier travel such as by participating in the Modeshift STARS programme (including working towards accreditation).
  • Pupil Involvement
Involving pupils in exploring travel challenges and co-designing ideas for change is highly encouraged. Resources to support pupil engagement include:
  • Community Support
Evidence of backing from parents, carers, residents, and local stakeholders strengthens an application. Resources to support community engagement include:
  • Propensity for Modal Shift
Locations where there is most scope to increase walking, wheeling, or cycling levels among pupils and families – considering population data, existing travel patterns, or addressing barriers to active travel – will be prioritised.
  • Existing Road Safety Issues
Locations with known safety concerns – such as collision data, near misses, or traffic-related complaints – will be prioritised.
  • Geographical Spread
We will aim to support a wide range of schools across Birmingham, including those that most align with other local projects or council priorities.
  • Policy Context
Applications will be reviewed for alignment with wider city strategies, including the Birmingham Transport Plan, Road Harm Reduction Strategy, and Vision Zero goals.
