School streets - Information for parents
Many schools face traffic-related challenges during drop-off and pick-up times, including congestion, unsafe parking, and poor air quality. School Streets help tackle these issues by temporarily restricting motor traffic on selected streets around schools at the start and end of the school day.
Under this scheme:
- Designated streets become Pedestrian & Cycle Zones for a short period (typically 30 minutes to 1 hour) at school drop-off and pick-up times
- Clear signage is put in place at entry points informing drivers of the restrictions
- Motor vehicles are not permitted to enter or drive within the zone during these times, unless they hold an exemption permit
- Parents and carers who need to drive are encouraged to park legally nearby and walk the final part of their journey
Where possible, we work with schools to identify suitable locations for "Park & Stride" schemes and/or to develop Walking Buses
