School streets - Information for parents
Many schools face traffic-related challenges during drop-off and pick-up times, including congestion, unsafe parking and poor air quality.
School Streets help tackle these issues by temporarily restricting motor traffic on selected streets around schools at the start and end of the school day.
How School Streets work
Under this scheme:
- designated streets become Pedestrian and Cycle Zones for a short period, typically 30 minutes to 1 hour
- signs at entry points tell drivers when restrictions apply
- motor vehicles cannot enter or drive within the zone unless they have an exemption permit
- parents and carers who need to drive are encouraged to park legally nearby and walk the final part of their journey
Walking and Park and Stride schemes
Where possible, we work with schools to identify suitable locations for Park and Stride schemes and develop Walking Buses.
