Health outcomes associated with ultra-processed food groups: exploration report
This exploratory report aims to provide a clear, evidence-based overview of the health effects of ultra-processed foods. It seeks to:
- navigate conflicting perspectives
- address growing public concern
- support the development of effective local policies to reduce high and rising consumption of ultra-processed foods
The report found that although evidence is still emerging, soft drinks (including artificially sweetened / diet drinks) and processed meat are the foods which may have the strongest negative health impacts.
The report provides a number of suggestions of actions that local authorities can take to mitigate the impacts of ultra-processed foods.
