Birmingham Food Resilience map

Across the city, Local food legends are playing a vital role in impacting the Birmingham Food Revolution, using their skills, knowledge and experience to support their community. For many years, these efforts have provided invaluable assistance to countless people. To help this work, the Birmingham Food Resilience Map has been created, which provides details of organisations operating around the city to develop a circular and regenerative food system.

This map highlights key food system locations involved in growing food, offering affordable food, or composting food waste. Its goal is to help you connect with local organisations where you can either receive or donate surplus food, food waste, or compost, fostering a more resilient and sustainable food network.

Use the Birmingham Food Resilience map to find:

  • active local gardens and allotments where food is being grown
  • affordable food provision organisations including food banks, food pantries and community kitchens
  • community food composting sites where waste is being converted to quality soil

To view full details and descriptions of the pinned locations, click the "view larger map" icon in the top right corner of the map.

Tips for connecting with local organisations

  1. Identify local organisations:
    • use the Birmingham Food Resilience Map to find nearby organisations accepting donations of food, food waste or compost
    • select an organisation that suits your needs and check their contact details and operational days
  2. Make contact:
    • contact the chosen organisation to confirm they can accept your donation
    • learn about their specific requirements, such as types of accepted donations, drop-off times, and other instructions
  3. Prepare your donation:
    • for food: harvest produce at peak ripeness, clean it, and inspect for quality. Follow the organisation's preference for washed or unwashed produce
    • for compost: ensure food waste is suitable for composting and complies with the organisation’s guidelines
  4. Packaging:
    • use clean, food-grade containers for packaging, ensuring that all items are clearly labelled
    • store perishable items in cool, dry conditions as required, and aim to deliver them within 24 hours. To ensure food safety, refer to the Food Standards Agency's food hygiene guidelines
    • package items securely to prevent leaks, contamination, or spillage
  5. Transportation:
    • clean your vehicle’s storage area
    • use clean coolers or insulated bags for fresh produce
    • transport food waste and compost safely to avoid spills
  6. Delivery:
    • arrive on time for the drop-off and follow the organisation’s instructions
    • complete any required paperwork to finalise the donation process
  7. Additional tips:
    • coordinate with others in your community to combine donations, increasing the impact
    • ask for feedback from organisations to improve future donations and compost contributions
