Background

The Alexander Stadium has provided a focal point for athletics on a regional, national and international level since the old stadium opened in 1976. Since then, the stadium has only received one major upgrade (the construction of the Back Straight Stand in 2011).

The next two years will see the Stadium transformed into an enhanced facility that is needed not only for the likes of local athletics teams such as Birchfield Harriers, but also to host major world-class events.

The improvements to Alexander Stadium will see enhanced facilities for the local community and existing tenants to use for generations to come and establish a new teaching base for Birmingham City University.

This exciting development is well underway, construction having started in May 2020, as part of the wider regeneration of Perry Barr. The Alexander Stadium will become a pivotal point in Birmingham’s and Perry Barr’s future.
