Tell us about a change in your household

It is important that you tell us immediately if there has been a change in your household where either:

  • you are in receipt of a single person discount
  • you are disregarded for Council Tax purposes
  • someone has turned 18 years old
  • someone has moved in who is aged 18 or older

Any changes to the number of people in your household can affect your Council Tax bill.

How tell us

Make sure that you have your Council Tax reference number with you before you start. Your reference number begins with 50 and is 10 digits long. You can find this in the top right corner of your Council Tax bill.

Tell us about a change in your household

What happens next

We will review your change and may send you a revised bill.

We may also ask to see more information. For example, if the person moving into your household is disregarded from being counted for the Council Tax calculation.

Changes to exemptions and discounts

If there has been a change in your household, you could be eligible to receive an exemption or discount on your Council Tax bill. For more information, see our section on exemptions and discounts.

Changes to benefits

If you claim Council Tax Support (CTS), you may also need to tell the Benefits Service about your change in circumstances. For more information, visit Reporting a change in circumstances.
