Reflections on My Internship Experience at Birmingham City Council
Qurat – Student Intern in the Knowledge Team – September 2024
“I am pleased to share that I am thoroughly enjoying my placement. It has been an excellent learning experience, and I am gaining valuable insights. Additionally, I am relishing the opportunity to network and meet new people. I am delighted to inform you that my placement has been extended. I am enjoying this experience so much that I will feel quite sad when it comes to an end.
Thank you once again for your support.”
Aniekeme (Annie) - Student Intern on the Cultural Intelligence Programme - August 2024
''I am deeply grateful for my placement at Birmingham City Council's Public Health Division, where I had the privilege of contributing to the BLACHIR initiative. I supported the implementation of the Cultural Intelligence Framework and created BCIF learning modules, enhancing my understanding of cultural intelligence. Additionally, I analysed and presented 2021 census data on communities of identity, offering valuable demographic insights. I also supported the organization and planning of community co-production testing sessions, fostering collaboration with local communities, and designed a comprehensive poster summarizing all these activities. This experience has significantly broadened my knowledge of public health and equipped me with practical skills in data analysis, community engagement, and project management. Thank you to the entire team for your guidance and support throughout this enriching journey.''
Silvestre Asubonteng – Student Intern on the Cultural Intelligence Programme – October 2024
“During my internship with Birmingham City Council's public health team, I focused on cultural intelligence, developing skills to navigate and address the diverse health needs of multicultural communities. I collaborated with professionals to design a culturally sensitive health campaign toolkit, ensuring that it was accessible and easy for healthcare professionals to use . This experience enhanced my understanding of how cultural context influences health behaviours and outcomes, and it strengthened my ability to engage with different communities to promote health equity.”
Nosheen Akhter – Student Intern in the Physical Activity Team – October 2024
During my internship at Birmingham City Council (BCC), I had the privilege of working with the Physical Activity Team under the guidance of Ufuoma. From the very start, I felt welcomed and valued as a part of the team. I regularly attended meetings where my input was sought, particularly by Ibrahim, who consistently engaged me in discussions about our ongoing projects. Ufuoma was instrumental in my growth during this internship; she was always just a message away and made time in her busy schedule to support and guide me through various tasks. With other tasks, some of which included writing a social media post for the Active Birmingham Strategy and developing a draft dissemination plan to enhance my understanding of the process, I am gaining valuable insights into the workings of public health initiatives. Additionally, I completed essential training required for all BCC employees, which further enriched my experience. Overall, this internship has been an enriching journey, and I am grateful for the opportunity to learn and contribute to meaningful initiatives within BCC.
