Training and work placements with Public Health
We are committed to being a training and learning team and we offer a range of training and work placements through the year. Some of these are paid training placements and some are aligned with the universities and DWP as part of unpaid training and development placements.
We currently offer the following types of placements:
Public Health higher specialist training placements
- Educational placements for public health trainees going through the Health Education England Public Health Higher Specialist Training Programme.
- Placements for trainees at every stage of training and can offer a good portfolio of project work to meet the full range of training competencies as well as senior leadership experiences for HST4/5 senior trainees approaching the end of training or in grace periods of training.
Other clinical higher specialist training placements
- Training placements for GP Vocational Training Trainees and Sport and Exercise Medicine Clinical trainees.
- We are open to exploring hosting project-based training placement for other clinical higher specialist training trainees.
Graduate Programme
We have an annual intake on our 1 year fixed term paid graduate programme. The programme is designed to help individuals with a masters qualification in public health, or similar topic, gain valuable ‘show how’ work experience to help them move into a substantive public health role.
These roles are advertised through the Birmingham City Council job website
Public Health Student Placements
- Each year we aim to offer student placements which can be accessed mainly through the universities in the city either via the course leads or careers teams.
- When students come to join the team they have a clearly defined project with specific outputs and these can vary between different placements. These are unpaid opportunities although students can apply to their university for financial support if applicable.
- University students will be involved in competency-based projects and are for those doing undergrad or MSc level qualifications, primarily but not exclusively in Public Health.
- The placements are flexible in time and can range from for example 40 hours over a number of weeks or 1 / 2 days a week for 12 weeks. The flexibility is based on the projects’ specific requirements as well as the individual students’ commitments.
- Individuals may also be restricted by their university policies or visa requirements which need to be considered prior applying for a placement.
- We also occasionally run module or dissertation linked placements or projects.
Here are some of the projects from recent placements:
- Research on Neurodiversity Deep Dive
- Website Management for Physical Activity Team
- Professional Studies placement aligned to Smoking Cessation work in the Adults Team
- On going Cultural Intelligence Placements
- Qualitative Data Analysis for Mental Wellbeing
- Children & Young People Screen time research
