EUniWell Mayor's Placement Scheme

The summer of 2022 has seen Birmingham City Council’s Public Health Team host the first EUniWell Mayor's Placement Scheme.

This gave six students from across Europe the chance to gain experience of exploring policy answers to wellbeing challenges in a workplace setting.

The student team was asked to look at some key questions around women’s health inequalities in the context of a diverse European city.

The project’s focus was timely as the council’s own Public Health Inequalities team is embarking on a new gender health inequalities project, and followed the recent publication of the Women’s Health Strategy for England.

Students worked independently – they benefited from weekly group supervision sessions with a public health assistant director and senior officer, and one- to-one sessions were also available.

Students reviewed key literature to gather evidence for interventions that provide positive outcomes for women and girls.

They also used their findings to recommend opportunities for action for local councils, producing a final report and summary poster for their topic.
